While I’d agree that the current layout is yet to exceed the previous one I’m all for progress! ;–)

My main suggestion would be to alter the relative widths of the columns, in particular make the second (middle) column wider at the expense of the 3rd column. This might cause some issues on the main page (As the Welcome text is in this column currently), but on most other pages the 3rd column is fairly empty.
